UFC NEWS: James Te Huna vs. Alexander Gustafsson reportedly on tap for UFC 127 in Australia

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_637.jpg
Another solid light heavyweight bout is reportedly coming to the UFC 127 card in Australia, as MMANews.se reports that New Zealand native James Te Huna will fight for his second time in the UFC against Alexander Gustafsson.

Te Huna fought on the UFC's first event in Australia at last February's UFC 110, where he defeated Saturday's TUF 12 Finale headliner Igor Pokrajac by TKO in the third round. He was set to return at UFC 120 in London in October, but an injury forced him off the card.

Gustafsson will make his fourth appearance in the Octagon, riding high after a submission victory over Cyrille Diabate at UFC 120. That win was a bounce back from his first career loss to Phil Davis by anaconda choke at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi.

UFC 127 airs live in North America on pay-per-view on Saturday, February 26, though the event takes place in Sydney, Australia on Sunday, February 27 with the time difference. The card will be headlined by a welterweight bout between B.J. Penn and Jon Fitch.

Penick's Analysis: This is a good fight, and this card continues to fill up with really good match-ups for the fans in Australia. Gustafsson looked very good against Diabate, and though Te Huna hasn't fought in a year because of injury he had a stoppage win in his one UFC fight, and he's stopped fighters in 11 of his wins. This could be a very exciting fight, for sure.

What you need to know from this week on "The Ultimate Fighter"

This week's episode of "The Ultimate Fighter" has two fights, a coaching legend and an incredibly kind compliment just for you. Read on for spoilers and a recap of this week's episode.

Stupid prank of the week: Sevak Magakian rigged the kitchen faucets so that they would spray on Michael Johnson, who promptly blamed it on on Alex "Bruce LeRoy" Caceres. Seriously, guys, these pranks are getting weaker by the episode.

Fight One of the Week: Kyle Watson (Team GSP) vs. Aaron Wilkinson (Team Koscheck)

Round 1: Watson started with a quick takedown and instantly moved to side control. He continued to work to control Wilkinson on the ground, and despite a few bursts of movement, Watson owned the Team Koscheck fighter. With more than a minute left in the round, Watson methodically took Wilkinson's back and sunk in a rear naked choke. As his coaches yelled, "Don't tap!" Wilkinson was forced to tap, making Watson a semi-finalist.

"Rear naked choke! Another one. How many rear naked chokes has my team ... I mean, I can't believe it!" Koscheck said after the bout.

Legendary coach cameo of the week: Freddie Roach stopped by Team GSP's training -- the same Freddie Roach who trains Manny Pacquaio. The fighters are all blown away just to be able to talk to Roach, much less train with him. Roach dropped an astounding compliment about Johnson:

"Michael Johnson has great speed. Reminds me of Pacquaio, a little bit," Roach said.

Neutral corners of the week: Roach worked with both Johnson and Caceres to get them ready to fight each other. GSP decided to not corner either fighter, so we're due for another eerily quiet bout.

Not-so-neutral coach of the week: Though GSP is not cornering either fighter, Koscheck is clearly behind Alex Caceres. He cheers on "Bruce LeRoy" throughout the weigh-ins, and claims that GSP fought for this match-up to get rid of the fighter he thinks is the weaker link. GSP stays silent and smiles as Kos jabbers on. Kos even offers to help out Caceres, but stops short at wearing a red jersey.

Watson corners Johnson, while Jeff Lentz corners Caceres.

Fight Two of the Week: Michael Johnson (Team GSP) vs. Alex Caceres (Team GSP)

Round 1: Johnson starts with a quick takedown, but doesn't keep Caceres down for long. When the two pop back up, Johnson controls the stand-up and knocks Caceres' mouthguard out. When he reaches down to pick it up, Johnson appears annoyed, and Caceres responds with, "C'mon, dog." The action restarts, and Johnson continues to control, Caceres has great movement throughout the bout. Still, in-between rounds, Koscheck yells, "You won that round, Alex." Jonathan Brookins tells Caceres the same thing.

Round 2: Caceres starts the round smiling and then promptly gets taken down. Johnson works side control and then ground and pound until Caceres works to his base and then stands up. Caceres briefly gains control on the ground, but doesn't do much with it, and after a short time standing, Johnson takes top position again. Caceres regains standing position for a bit, until Johnson takes him down one more time to end the bout.

The judges scored it 20-18, 20-18 and 20-18 for Michael Johnson, earning him a spot in the semifinals.

Koscheck and GSP head into White's office to talk about semifinal match-ups, and much to Dana's surprise, they come to a consensus quickly, picking these semifinals:

Jonathan Brookins vs. Kyle Watson and Michael Johnson vs. Nam Phan

These first of these fights will air next week. Tune in.

TUF vets Sadollah and Soszynski outclass opponents at UFC 122

Amir Sadollah just entered his 30's but he's far from a finished product in MMA. The Virginian spent most of his 20's learning the discipline of muay thai and working as a full-time medical tech. He went for broke on Season 7 of "The Ultimate Fighter" and is now a full-time MMA fighter. You can see his game coming together. Sadollah outhustled a skilled youngster in Peter Sobotta. By the end of the fight, the German could barely lift his hands as Sadollah scored a unanimous decision victory, 30-27 on all three cards.

Sadollah (4-2, 4-2 UFC) pushed the pace from the opening bell. He let loose with well placed kick-punch combinations. As the fight moved into the second, Sadollah's work with leg kicks started to take its toll. Sobotta (8-4, 0-3 UFC) tried to match the output but never landed anything significant. He had very little left in the final round.

The champ from TUF 7 got his career back on track with the win. A loss may have put Sadollah's gig with the promotion in jeopardy.

Soszynski knocks around Reljic for fifth UFC win

Krzysztof Soszynski is a big dude to take head on. Goran Reljic tried to match the Polish muscle man on the feet but wilted in the final round. Over three hard rounds, Soszynski took some damage but was able to get the nod on all the scorecards, 30-27.

Reljic, a student of Croatian legend Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, tried to work his kicking game in the early going but Soszynski was able to time the attempts and fire back with some nasty counter shots. Reljic got the message early when he ate some big shots from the former heavyweight. The Croatian actually changed his gameplan and tried to work for takedowns. He got Soszynski (22-10, 5-2 UFC) on his back with 1:20 left in the first but did little damage on the ground.

The second was highlighted mostly by clinch work along the cage. The bigger, stronger Soszysnki wore down Reljic with some good knees. The fight hit the deck early in the third with Soszysnki working hip control. He pounded away with some huge shots as Reljic tried to scramble but wasn't able to rise to his for 90 seconds. Back on the feet, Soszynski tried for a thai clinch and Reljic just flopped to his back where he took more punches and hammer fists.

Reljic (8-3, 1-3 UFC) opened his UFC career with a dynamic knockout win over Wilson Gouveia at UFC 84.  He battled injuries for the rest of 2008 and 2009. This year hasn't been kind. He's lost three straight decisions and is probably done with the promotion.

ROUNDTABLE (pt. 1 of 2): Thoughts on the booking of B.J. Penn vs. Jon Fitch following Penn's UFC 123 KO of Matt Hughes - Hansen, Lee, Hyden, Hobaugh and Amadi

PennBJArtCRG_150_71.jpg
What is your reaction to the B.J. Penn vs. Jon Fitch booking after Penn's UFC 123 knockout of Matt Hughes?

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Well, I was surprised by the speed of the announcement, that's for sure. Clearly this fight was in the works, pending a B.J. win, for quite a while. I don't really have a reaction to the booking itself, since I never had enough time to contemplate a logical next step for B.J. It absolutely shows that Penn, say what you want about the guy, has no desire to take the path of least resistance in his career. This is the most talented guy that he could have been set up with, since there was zero chance of an Edgar or GSP fight being booked next for him. If B.J. can avoid the clinch, he'll win this fight.

ERIC LEE, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

This match up doesn't make much sense to me. B.J. Penn has already expressed that he thinks he can be Lightweight Champ again. And Jon Fitch has been upset that he hasn't received a title shot yet in the welterweight division. It's a great match up that will probably sell a lot of pay-per-views. But whoever wins the fight doesn't really move up much in their division.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I think it's a good match-up. Both guys are just outside of the title picture, and this fight will go a long way towards deciding who's the next in line to battle for the #1 contenders slot in the welterweight division. I like the fight, I just hope B.J. is as motivated as he was for the fight with Hughes.

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH SPECIALIST

B.J. Penn did a nice job in his fight against Matt Hughes. He looked in shape and determined. Hughes looked slow and old. The fight with Jon Fitch is an intriguing one, but one that I feel B.J. loses. Frankie Edgar did a great job in both of his fights with Penn and used his wrestling strength to win and keep the Lightweight Title. Very few wrestlers in the UFC can say they are better wrestlers than Edgar. Jon Fitch is one of the few that can. Fitch grinds this win out with a three round decision.

JASON AMADI, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

This is the type of matchmaking that sets the UFC apart from other organizations. B.J. Penn fighting Jon Fitch solves problems for the UFC that no one really saw a way around until the matchup was announced.

B.J. Penn has two losses to both the UFC Welterweight and Lightweight Champions. His rematches with Georges St. Pierre and Frank Edgar were so one-sided that it would be impossible for the UFC to drum up interest in a third fight with either champion. Penn is still deserving of top level competition, so Jon Fitch is the perfect opponent. While there is no title fight incentive for Penn, as even a win over Jon Fitch might not put him near a title shot at 170 lbs. or 155 lbs. anytime soon, there is a degree of prestige that comes with handing a fighter like Jon Fitch a loss.

For Fitch, there are absolutely title implications in this fight. Jon Fitch may not be public enemy number one for the UFC, but they certainly are in no rush to give him another title shot. A win over a big name like B.J. Penn would be enough for the UFC to be able to market him in a title fight, despite him not exactly having an exciting highlight reel.

For the UFC, this is a win-win scenario. If Fitch wins, they can finally market him to a casual audience, and if B.J. Penn wins, they can finally stop looking for reasons not to give Jon Fitch a title shot.

ROUNDTABLE (pt. 1 of 2): What should be next for Rampage Jackson and Lyoto Machida following their split decision bout at UFC 123? Hansen, Lee, Hyden, Hobaugh and Amadi

UFC_123_poster_180_22.jpg
What should be next for Rampage Jackson and Lyoto Machida following their split decision bout at UFC 123?

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Ever since Chris Park theorized Jon Jones' potential path to a title shot back in August or September (beat Matyushenko, then beat Bader, then beat the winner of Jackson vs. Machida), I've been on board with that plan. I think it makes sense to book Rampage vs. Jones next (provided Jones defeats Bader in February), with the winner getting a shot at the title at the end of 2011. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if they put Jackson in against the winner of Rich Franklin vs. Forrest Griffin, and give an immediate title shot to Jon Jones (once again, provided he defeats Bader in February).

As for Machida... if Matt Hamill is really going to face a top 10 opponent next, it's either going to be Forrest Griffin or Lyoto Machida. I have no interest in Machida vs. Hamill, but it's something that Joe Silva is likely thinking about. Preferably, he'll get the loser of the Franklin vs. Griffin fight.

ERIC LEE, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I still think Rampage needs one more solid win before he can get a title shot. But no matter who he faces for the title, it's just gonna be a rematch of a fight he's already lost. Unfortunately for Machida, he now has two losses in a row. It may take two to three fights for him to climb back up the rankings. If he wants another title shot, he's going to have to start winning decisively.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I'd like to see Rampage fight the winner of the Jon Jones vs. Ryan Bader fight, with the winner of that receiving a title shot. I think Machida should fight the winner of Forrest Griffin vs. Rich Franklin.

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH SPECIALIST

I am with Dana on this. Rampage won the first two rounds and an instant rematch is not warranted. I feel like Rampage gets the winner of theRashad Evansvs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in the next Light Heavyweight title fight. Lyoto Machida should fight the winner of theJonJonesvs. RyanBader fight. The winner of that fight should be back in the title hunt.

JASON AMADI, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

This one is pretty cut and dry. Quinton Jackson moves towards another title opportunity while Lyoto Machida takes a step down in competition. Machida is coming off of two losses to two of the most dangerous strikers in the division. So the real question moving forward is if Machida serves to test young prospects, or if he is kept near the title picture by facing more established talent. The obvious choice would be for the winner of Jon Jones-Ryan Bader to face Lyoto Machida on their road to a title shot. But, because of the inherent danger in having someone like Machida being the first major test to a blossoming prospect, it?s more likely to be the winner of Rich Franklin-Forrest Griffin.

UFC NEWS: New York Jets turn motivation from UFC Lightweight Champ Frankie Edgar into victory over Houston Texans

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_620.jpg
UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar took on a different role than fighter and Champion this weekend: motivational speaker.

According to a report from ESPN New York, New Jersey native Edgar came to speak to the NFL's New York Jets on Saturday night to help Jets coach Rex Ryan sell a speech on mental toughness. Edgar reportedly gave a lengthy speech on toughness and the players also viewed a highlight package of Edgar's UFC fights. Several players addressed his speech following a hard fought victory over the Houston Texans on Sunday, and pointed to his words as motivation in their come from behind win.

"What a perfect time," Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez said. "(He was) talking about never giving up, being counted out, playing until the end, fighting, believing in yourself, believing in your team and the people around you."

Said Jim Leonhard, Jets strong safety, "It was unreal to see him fight and hear about his career. I thought he sent the right message ... Maybe we should bring him back next week."

Edgar returns to action on New Year's Day to make his second Lightweight Title defense against the only man to ever defeat him, Gray Maynard.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: It's very cool for Edgar to get a chance to not only talk to the team, but to be a source of motivation for them as well. It's a positive sign for Edgar, as he is far from a proven draw at this point, and this is another step into the mainstream consciousness for him. Just being mentioned in the same piece as these players is positive press, and for them to point to things he said to the team the night before is a very cool thing for him and the UFC.

EDIT: Initial report mistakenly stated the Jets defeated the Tennessee Titans.

PARK: Matt Hughes vs. B.J. Penn a meeting of legends in UFC 123 rubber match

By: Chris Park, MMATorch UK Specialist

Staff10Park_130_75.jpg
This Saturday night at UFC 123 two greats in MMA history will enter the Octagon when B.J. "The Prodigy" Penn and Matt Hughes face off for the third and final time.

Matt Hughes was once regarded as "the perfect MMA fighter" as he saw off all comers during his reign at the top of the 170 lb. division.

Regardless of the opposition, Hughes rose to the challenge, always finding a way to win. Successful in his first championship reign, Hughes became a five-time defending champion; seeing off the likes of Frank Trigg, Sean Sherk and the man he initially took the title from - Carlos Newton.

During a second stint at the top Hughes produced some of the most memorable moments in welterweight history: the submission victory that handed a young George St. Pierre his first loss; the comeback against Frank Trigg in their re-match, and not to forget the UFC 60 marquee fight against the returning legend Royce Gracie.

The comeback win against Trigg will go down as one of the defining moments of Matt Hughes' glittering career. An accidental low blow handed Trigg an opportunity, and one he was happy to capitalize on, as he threw a barrage of shots that sent Hughes to the canvas. The title looked on the verge of changing hands as Trigg locked in a rear-naked choke with Hughes struggling to defend himself.

A test of a true champion is how he responds to adversity, and as Hughes worked his way back to his feet, he scooped Trigg up onto his shoulder, ran the length of the Octagon, and brutally drilled the challenger into the canvas.

After a dose of heavy ground and pound, Hughes secured a match winning rear-naked choke of his own to once again defend the Welterweight Title.

While Hughes has already claimed his seat in the UFC Hall Of Fame, it is expected that B.J. Penn will soon follow as "The Prodigy" looks to continue the writing of his legacy with Saturday night's co-main event.

Penn will undoubtedly go down as one of - if not the - very best lightweights in UFC history, having dismantled the likes of Joe Stevenson, Sean Sherk, Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez.

Penn has recently suffered a slump in fortunes, losing his title at UFC 112 to Frankie "The Answer" Edgar, and then falling victim to a one sided white-wash during their UFC 118 instant rematch.

The manner in which Edgar defeated Penn made many question what was next for "The Prodigy," and if he would even fight again. The general consensus was that another charge in the welterweight division may be the correct move, and shortly after, Penn vs. Hughes III was confirmed.

Holding a victory over one another, this rubber matchup is a long time in the making, and Penn himself has referred to the fight as "a reason to live." Penn will be looking to recreate the kind of performance that saw him defeat Hughes, and shock the MMA world, when they first met back in 2004.

With Hughes pretty much clearing out all of the challengers available at welterweight, the UFC turned to 155 lb. standout - Penn - to offer their champion a fresh challenge.

Hughes himself stated that he found it insulting that a fighter from a weight class lower imagined they could prise the welterweight crown away from his grasp.

At UFC 46 that is exactly what happened as B.J. dropped Hughes to the canvas before taking his back and submitting the shell shocked defending champion inside of the very first round.

Penn had achieved the unthinkable by moving up in weight and defeating the "invincible" Matt Hughes in devastating fashion. As Penn celebrated he kissed Hughes while knowing he had not only become the Welterweight Champion, but had cemented himself as an MMA superstar.

In their rematch two years later, Hughes again suffered an early scare as Penn took the first two rounds before Hughes came back in round three. Hughes trapped Penn in an extremely effective crucifix position, which allowed Hughes to land over 30 unanswered blows, forcing the referee to stop the fight, and subsequently hand Penn the first stoppage loss of his career.

A win this Saturday for Hughes may see him thrown into the title mix for what would be a fourth and final shot at the welterweight crown, while victory for Penn could be just what is needed to revitalise "The Prodigy," and help him return to the form that once saw him defeat Hughes and capture the UFC Welterweight Title.

'Rampage' (finally) suffers a definitive loss

There will never be answer to who really won last night's main event at UFC 123. Some favor Quinton "Rampage" Jackson while others liked the Octagon control exhibited by Lyoto Machida. Jackson took a split decision win from the Brazilian. He stated several times that he was lucky to win and even said Machida deserved a rematch.

The good feelings continued until Rampage arrived back home in Los Angeles. That's when he decided to take on his manager Anthony McGann. Jackson got nailed playing bag tag and went for a ride.

UFC NEWS: B.J Penn - "Deep down in my heart, I know I'll be Lightweight Champion again"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

PennBJArtCRG_150_65.jpg
Despite last week talking about his interest in fighting at both welterweight and lightweight in the future, B.J. Penn has his eyes set on regaining his UFC Lightweight Championship down the line.

He revealed as much on ESPN's Sportscenter on Wednesday morning, and said that he expects to head back down to the 155 lb. division after dispatching of Matt Hughes in their rubber match at UFC 123 on Saturday.

"I know I'll get my chance again," Penn said on the program. "I plan on going out and beating Matt Hughes, and honestly, deep down in my heart, I know I'll be Lightweight Champion again."

This diversion up to welterweight to face Hughes came about as Penn wanted to stay as active as he can following consecutive losses to Frankie Edgar, and also because he feels he has a score to settle after the two split fights years ago.

"I'm probably stuck somewhere in between [lightweight and welterweight], but it doesn't matter," Penn said. "We can get down at 170 lbs. or 155 lbs. It doesn't make a big difference to me."

Penn and Hughes meet on Saturday in the co-main event of UFC 123 from The Palace in Auburn Hills just outside of Detroit, Mich.

Penick's Analysis: This is more clear than Penn's comments last week about his plans following this bout, and it makes more sense for him. I honestly believe Frankie Edgar may just be the kryptonite for Penn in the lightweight division. His combination of speed, striking and takedown ability were enough to keep Penn off his game in two fights, but I don't know that anyone else in the division is capable of duplicating that. We'll see what B.J. Penn shows up on Saturday, but if he gets through Hughes with a relative amount of ease, he'll be well on his way towards getting back in the title picture when he drops down.

UFC NEWS: UFC 123 "Prelims Live" on Spike draws an average of 1.5 million viewers

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_123_poster_180_20.jpg
Saturday's broadcast of UFC 123: Prelims Live on Spike TV brought in an average of 1.5 million viewers to the network, according to the ratings released today.

The hour long broadcast, featuring Mark Munoz's decision victory over Aaron Simpson and Brian Foster's submission win over Matt Brown, tied for the third largest viewership of the UFC Prelims Live specials, which have run for select events since September of 2009.

This broadcast served as the lead in to the pay-per-view portion of the card at The Palace at Auburn Hills just outside of Detroit, Mich. The pay-per-view broadcast was headlined by the light heavyweight contest between Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Lyoto Machida.

Only UFC 109 and UFC 114 brought more viewers to Spike for their hour long "Prelims Live" broadcasts, and Saturday's show tied last month's UFC 121 and January's UFC 108 numbers.

UFC 123 Prediction and Betting Contest Results

By Matt Pelkey, MMATorch Columnist

Finally (the Rock has come BACK to...) we had one of our champions dethroned. Just as a legend regained past form at UFC 123 when B.J. Penn knocked out Matt Hughes in twenty seconds, so did a legend of our own as former champion, and one of the top all-around performers in Torch Contest history, Kubi captured the Prediction Title from longtime defending champ Eric Marchment. Kubi's 8-3 mark was tied for a contest-best and it was two picks better than Marchment's 6-5. Congrats to Kubi for climbing the mountain once again! He moves on to UFC 124 to tangle with Drew Rothstein, who emerged from a glut of predictors at 8-3 with his six correct rounds/methods. Congrats to Mr. Rothstein and good luck on your impending title shot!

On the betting side, it was the status quo yet again. Despite having an extra week to prepare after his title shot was called off at UFC 122, Casey Vacarro was unable to unseat Betting Champ Cambo "Rambo" Nelson. Nelson is quietly putting together an all-timer of a title reign and gets what appears on paper to be a bit of a break for his next title defense. Chris "The Walrus" Wallner, a relative newcomer, thumped the rest of the betting field, turning in a perfect sheet in winning the pool by over $800 more than his closest challenger. Performer of the Night: Kubi. With an honorable mention to Chris Wallner for his betting picks, Kubi reclaimed the Prediction title and had a top-5 finish in the betting pool.

Goat of the Night: I'll take the field here. On a card that was expected to be full of easy-to-predict, one-sided fights, nearly half of our predictors were sub-.500 and a whopping ten (TEN!) people lost every cent in the betting contest. Congrats to all of us. We earned this one.

UFC QUOTABLES: Dana White - "These are the big leagues... you perform or you go away"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

WhiteDana_WK150_103.jpg
"It's a dog-eat-dog world, there's so many good guys out there, you're literally fighting for your UFC life every time you fight... It's no different than any other professional sports organization, it's exactly the way it works. You want to stay at the top of the food chain, you deal with it. If you don't, you won't. You know how many guys get cut by the NFL and Major League Baseball every day? It's crazy, staggering. Same thing here, no difference... Listen, these are the big leagues, no different than Major League Baseball, no different than the NFL, you perform or you go away."

-Dana White talks about the dynamic in the UFC with more fighters joining the roster and how fighters need to perform to keep their jobs. (Quotes transcribed by MMAFighting.com).

Penick's Analysis: When news of the merger with the WEC came down, one of the immediate realizations was that a lot of fighters were going to be losing their spot on the roster. With seven divisions instead of five, the bottom end of the five divisions the UFC was filling their cards out with before are going to be hit the worst. And the UFC has already sent a message about performance with the cutting of Gerald Harris this week. But this is what fighters need to be prepared for and know ahead of time when entering the UFC. Performing well is going to give them opportunities, and performing poorly will give them a one way ticket out. It might be a cruel reality, but reality is exactly what it is for the fighters under contract.

Still-evolving Davis ready for pressure at UFC 123

DETROIT -- Before taking on Tim Boetsch at UFC 123, UFC light heavyweight Phil Davis had to face a tough ask. He was in the spotlight at the Palace of Auburn Hills during the Pistons-Lakers game. Davis was given 24 seconds to hit as many free throws as he could. (Watch it here.) For each bucket he hit, $200 was donated to Pistons Care.

By the time he left the court, $1600 was donated. He said he felt more pressure going on the court than he ever has in the Octagon.

"Definitely free throws. Wrestling is what I know, it's what I'm good at. Anything kind of, sort of related to wrestling, I'm good with. Free throws? No," Davis said.

Though he hit eight free throws, he isn't breaking any stereotypes about wrestlers not being able to hoop.

"Let's not wave it off. It can be pushed to the back to the things people say about wrestlers."

Davis was a national champion wrestler for Penn State, and is most comfortable doing that which revolves around wrestling.

"Everything works its way back to wrestling"

"Everything with me works its way back to wrestling. To me, MMA is like wrestling, and I don't know why I've been wrestling for so long and not been punching. Wrestling is so much fun when you can punch people. I don't know why I haven't been doing it."

Davis works with both Alliance MMA in San Diego and American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose. He never wants to get too comfortable as a fighter, so he challenges himself by working with everyone from UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez to bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz. He's learned something from every fighter he's been around.

"I was helped by Jon Fitch and Cain Velasquez, except, most of his tips hurt. I'm always asking for help and they're more than happy to give it to me. Brandon Vera, too, really gave me a sharp kickboxing look," Davis said. "[Cruz] does a bunch of things that blow my mind. When you can move with a guy his speed, and land a few punches, you've got to be in good position and be able to move. He's definitely helped me get my footwork down and be ready to strike."

Davis' striking game is still evolving. He wants to be exciting, but is more focused on winning.

"You can go for a spinning backfist and miss it, or you hit a straight right. I think people will remember the spinning backfist, but if you get knocked out, no one's going to thank you for going for it. There's no style points in MMA. I stick to what I'm good at, and I stick to my game."

His hunger to learn, wrestling pedigree and natural talent make Davis an exciting prospect, but he's not letting it get to his head.

"You can't allow anyone to tell you your worth. That's both positive and negative. If someone tells you that you're the worst in the world, you can't believe that. If someone tells you you're the best in the world, you can't believe that either. You gotta be who you are and know where you're at. I know I get beat up in the gym every day, so it's no mystery. I'm not ready for a title shot."

ROUNDTABLE: Was UFC 122 the worst UFC event of 2010? Hansen, Lee, Hyden, Hobaugh, Perez, Marsh, Williams, Shelby and Penick

UFC_122_poster_180_18.jpeg
Was UFC 122 the worst UFC event of the year?

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

UFC Fight Night: Maynard vs. Diaz might have been as bad as UFC 122, but the bar is set lower for a UFN than for a numbered event. UFC 122 featured the least spectacular card going into the event, and was also the least entertaining event of the year. Any way you look at it, yes, UFC 122 blew chunks.

ERIC LEE, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I would say UFC 120 was the worst event of the year. The fights were somewhat exciting. Condit had a surprising and spectacular knockout. But at the end of the event all that fighting really didn't make anything happen. There was no title fight nor was there even a title contention fight. Condit was not promised a title shot nor was Bisping for his win over Akiyama. It was especially lackluster because the main card only featured one finish from Condit. Every other fight was to decision. Not an event I'll remember.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

No, I think UFC 119 was the worst UFC event of the year. The supposed "main event" of Frank Mir vs. Cro-Cop was one of the worst main events in the history of fighting. UFC 119 was one of the worst UFC events of all-time, and anyone who bought that show deserves a refund.

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH SPECIALIST

UFC 119 in Indianapolis was the worst UFC event of this year. UFC 122 was close. The difference was that 119 was a pay-per-view event. The fact that 122 was not a pay-per-view makes it NOT AS BAD. The fights were horrible in both, but not paying for terrible fights is always better than paying for them!

ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

It's possible that UFC 122 was the worst event of the year, but going in, with the fights that were on the card, you had to know it was going to be a dud waiting to happen. I would actually say that UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi was the worst. That had a stacked fight card, yet was headlined by one of the worst fights in UFC history with Anderson Silva dancing around Damian Maia, and a sloppy host of other fights. I would say that was the worst with the expectations it had surrounding it.

GRIFFIN MARSH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I'm still waiting on Dana to repay me for 112 and I seriously hope this wasn't his idea of compensation. It was without a doubt the worst card of the year, even worse than 119. Every bout with the exception of one or two were capable of inducing an insomniac into a deep, deep sleep. I was very disapointed with the event but hey, it's free! Hopefully Dana will keep his word as far as the repayment for 112, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

ALEX WILLIAMS, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

No. The fights were not riveting, and more importantly, most were not significant (i.e., most of the wins and losses didn't impact the title scene). Thin cards are what happen when the UFC insists on running so many events per year. Still, one key reason I greatly preferred UFC 122 to, say, UFC 119 (Frank Mir vs Mirko Cro Cop): the UFC didn't ask me to pay $55 to watch a card that had no business being on pay-per-view.

TOBEN SHELBY, MMATORCH AUDIO CO-HOST

I'm not 100% sure that UFC 122 was the "worst" UFC event this year, but since I fell asleep twice while watching itand several other bad events this year didn't look quite as bad in retrospect, I'll give it the nod. There were some decent fights, but no standouts and a less-than-thrilling main event didn't help. It's weird to say a card that saw a number one contender for the middleweight title emerge was the worst card of the year, but it just didn't leave a great taste in my mouth.

JAMIE PENICK, MMATORCH EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

I'd have to lean to UFC 119, because while UFC 122 was certainly a lackluster event, capped off by a disappointing main event, it didn't cost fans to see it, and the expectations were lower. The Sean Sherk vs. Evan Dunham fight at 119 was the only one that boosted it, but with many disagreeing with the decision it brought that fight down a notch as well. The rest of the fights on the main card of that event were disappointing at best, and really bad at worst. 122, while not a good card, still showcased a few entertaining prelims and wasn't nearly as disappointing as 119.

COUNTDOWN TO PENN VS. HUGHES III PART TWO: A profile of former UFC Welterweight and Lightweight Champion B.J. Penn

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

PennBJArtCRG_150_63.jpg
UFC 123 on Saturday features the third bout between Matt Hughes and B.J. Penn. As former Champions and two of the sport's greatest fighters, this fight will be a historic concluding chapter in a trilogy that began nearly six years ago. In this five part series this week, we'll take a look at the careers of each fighter, each of the first two meetings between the two of them, and finally what this third fight means for both men. Today we take a look at former UFC Welterweight and Lightweight Champion B.J. Penn.

B.J. Penn rightfully earned his nickname "The Prodigy" in 2000 when, after training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for only three years, he became the first non-Brazilian to win the Mundials (the World Jiu Jitsu Championship) in the black belt division.

It wasn't long after that achievement that Penn made his debut in the sport in the UFC, and he took the, at the time, fledgling sport by storm with his first three fights in 2001. Blasting through Caol Uno in 11 seconds at UFC 34 earned Penn a shot at UFC Lightweight Champion Jens Pulver, but he came up short for the first time in a five round battle.

Penn worked his way back to a second title fight over the next year, but when his rematch with Uno ended in a draw, the lightweight division was essentially eliminated from the UFC with no Champion on top. But Penn returned to the UFC 11 months after the draw with Uno to challenge the dominant Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes.

In one of the most triumphant moments of his career, Penn breezed through the Champion, shocking him and everyone watching with a first round submission victory to capture his first UFC title.

It was to be short-lived, however, as he was stripped of the title during a contract dispute and wouldn't see the inside of the Octagon for over two years.

Penn took that time to fight in Japan and his home state of Hawaii, taking fights in the middleweight division, and one open weight fight against future UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida, who outweighed him by 30 lbs. And yet, Penn's only defeat in that span was to Machida by decision.

His return to the UFC didn't go quite as planned, however. He dropped a split decision to Georges St. Pierre, and when GSP suffered an injury before his fight with Hughes, Penn stepped in to take on the Champion a second time. This time however, he lost by TKO in the third round.

He made his return to the lightweight division following that loss, and regained the dominance he had been known for at 155 lbs. After getting revenge over Jens Pulver after a season of coaching The Ultimate Fighter, Penn captured the Lightweight Championship that had eluded him earlier in his career when he destroyed Joe Stevenson at UFC 81.

Penn put a stamp on his hold of the division with a TKO victory over Sean Sherk, but then decided to move back up to welterweight for an ill-fated challenge of new 170 lb. kingpin GSP. After being handily defeated, Penn continued to establish his dominance over the UFC's 155 lb. fighters when he took out Ultimate Fighter season one finalists Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez in consecutive title defenses.

But 2010 brought Penn back down to earth. Rumors of bad training camps and bad habits while in camp have followed Penn throughout his career, and his motivation as a fighter has come into question on numerous occasions. Never before had that come as much to the forefront as it did after consecutive losses to Frankie Edgar, at UFC 112 and UFC 118.

Now, Penn re-enters the welterweight at UFC 123 division to meet his old foe Matt Hughes for a third time. As he continues to see a future for himself in the lightweight and welterweight divisions, he's first going to need to get back on track with a victory. If he can settle the score with Hughes, he'll need to find a way to focus his efforts towards a clear goal to get his career back on track.

TOMORROW: A look back at the first fight between Penn and Hughes from UFC 46 in 2004.

WEC 52 and UFC 122's Three Stars: Faber, Benavidez and Siver

Last week featured a ton of free (for the price of cable) MMA, and while WEC 52 was reliably fantastic, UFC 122 was not the best collection of fights. Still, both cards featured fighters who were a step above.

No. 1 star -- Urijah Faber: It turns out the new Faber is the same as the old Faber. In his debut at bantamweight, the former featherweight champ submitted Takeya Mizugaki, a fighter who had only lost by a stoppage once before in his career.

No. 2 star -- Joseph Benavidez: Faber's teammate and training partner had his own big win. He had to try three times, but finally, Benavidez was able to submit one of MMA's best jiu-jitsu players, Wagnney Fabiano, with a guillotine.

No. 3 star -- Dennis Siver: Fighting in front of his home crowd at UFC 122 in Germany, Siver delivered. He dominated "The Ultimate Fighter" star Andre Winner, and ended the bout with a beautiful rear-naked choke. He earned a $60,000 Submission of the Night bonus for his work.

Honorable mention -- Demetrious Johnson: "Mighty Mouse" executed a perfect game plan for beating Damacio Page, a fighter who won his last two fights by highlight-reel KOs. Johnson moved well, cut angles and used takedowns to avoid Page's lethal punches, then won with a guillotine. Thought he would be perfect for a flyweight division, Johnson has staked a claim on bantamweights, as well.

Who are your stars from the extended MMA weekend?

B.J. Penn KOs Matt Hughes at UFC 123

by Michael David SmithIn the third fight between two of the sport's all-time greats, B.J. Penn knocked out Matt Hughes with a quick, brutal display of precision striking at UFC 123.

The whole fight lasted just 21 seconds, and delivered Penn one of the most spectacular wins of his MMA career. Penn had lost two straight lightweight title fights this year and seemed to be on the downside of his career, but he bounced back in a big way by beating Hughes.

Penn got things started with a 1-2 combination, and when Hughes threw a kick, Penn caught it and nailed Hughes again. They briefly stepped back, and then Penn nailed Hughes with an overhand right, knocking Hughes flat on his back. Penn landed four more punches on the ground and Hughes wasn't defending himself, and the referee stepped in and stopped the fight.

UFC NEWS: Roy Nelson says he intends to fight in 2011, despite current contract entaglements

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

NelsonRoy_150_32.jpg
Roy Nelson's immediate future in the UFC came in doubt over the last month, as UFC President Dana White stated Nelson wouldn't be fighting in the UFC again until a prior contract with Roy Jones, Jr.'s Square Ring Promotions is figured out.

Nelson fought for the promotion in March of 2009 in their only event to date, March Badness, prior to joining the cast of The Ultimate Fighter's 10th season. Square Ring Promotions then filed suit, claiming they had the right to match any contract he would have been offered.

But while Nelson said he believes he's being sued along with Zuffa for breach of contract, he doesn't feel he owes anything to the promotion that hasn't run another event since that March Badness card. He discussed the situation on Monday with Ariel Helwani at MMAFighting.com.

"I guess from a lawyer's stand point or even a jury's stand point, I think it's kind of hard to say if you have any claims if you've never put on another MMA event ever in your whole entire life that I know of," Nelson said.

Nelson was scheduled to fight Shane Carwin at UFC 125 on New Year's Day, but when Carwin pulled out due to injury, Nelson was taken off the card entirely. Nelson said he thinks his removal had more to do with the integration of the WEC than this situation with Square Ring Promotions.

"I think they wanted it's the UFC and there's no rhyme or reason with stuff, usually," Nelson said. "It's a bigger way to roll in WEC into the UFC. It's a good way to start showcasing like Jose Aldo and trying to capitalize off like a Urijah Faber, the little guys."

"At the same time I look as a plus that my knee got better faster and I'll be ready anywhere in 2011."

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: I'm sure this situation will find itself worked out in quick enough fashion to get Nelson back into the cage by the spring. At least, I hope that will be the case, as there are plenty of fights that I'd like to see him take in the heavyweight division. And he's got a case against Square Ring Promotions' claim, as it's hard to claim contractual rights if they're not actively promoting fights. At the same time, I'm not a lawyer and won't pretend to know the intricacies of this case. I'm just hopeful that it gets taken care of in a timely manner so Nelson can get back into the cage.

UFC NEWS: Josh Grispi now to face Dustin Poirier at UFC 125

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Josh_Grispi_180_1.jpeg
Josh Grispi will no longer be fighting for the newly re-branded UFC Featherweight Championship at UFC 125, but according to Heavy.com he will remain on the card.

Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo was forced out of the bout on Tuesday with a compressed vertebrae that will require a month of therapy, and Grispi will now meet Dustin Poirier on the card.

Poirier blasted through Zach Micklewright at WEC 52 earlier this month, defeating him in 53 seconds in Las Vegas. In his eight career fights, he has won seven, all by stoppage before the third round. He's gone to decision once, losing to Danny Castillo in his WEC debut.

Grispi was initially supposed to meet Erik Koch on the WEC 52 card, but was pulled to face Aldo at UFC 125. The 14-1 22-year-old has won ten straight fights overall, including four first round stoppages in the WEC.

UFC 125 airs live on pay-per-view from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, headlined by the Lightweight Championship bout between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: Well, that's unfortunate news for the preliminary card fighters that were given a glimmer of hope for getting a televised slot. Grispi's going to have a chance to make a big impression on this card, and he'll either earn his title shot and introduce himself to the UFC audience in impressive fashion, or Poirier will make a big splash himself in his UFC debut. With Grispi having already been pulled from a bout, I'm sure he didn't want to stay out of action for any longer if he's ready to go. It's a risk, and if he gets hurt or doesn't win, he'll lose out on his shot at the title, but this also gives him a chance to introduce himself to the UFC fanbase before getting put into a title fight.

WEC NEWS: Anthony Pettis preparing for five round battle with Ben Henderson, ready to prove he's the best in the world

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Anthony_Pettis_1.jpeg
The final event for World Extreme Cagefighting is fast approaching, and the final challenger to the WEC Lightweight Championship is finishing up his preparation for the event.

For 23 year old Anthony Pettis, 2010 has been a banner year. WEC 53 will mark the fourth time he's fought in 2010, and will be his seventh fight in the last 18 months. To go along with a spot on the documentary series "World of Jenks," he now fights for a chance to challenge for the UFC Lightweight Championship.

While it would be easy for all of this to go to a young fighter's head, Pettis is remaining focused on the task at hand: WEC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson.

"I'm not looking past Ben Henderson," Pettis told MMATorch this week. "The guy's the Champ for a reason, and I've got my hands full with this guy. Once this fight's over and the outcome's decided, then I'll look to the next fight, but right now I'm focused on Ben Henderson.

"I'm excited that the UFC and WEC are merging, I've wanted to fight in the UFC since I started MMA, but like I said I've got my hands full with my next opponent."

Hands full may be an understatement. The 12-1 Henderson has won 11 fights in a row heading into this clash, five of them in the WEC. In his five WEC fights, Henderson has finished four of them, and the sole decision was his five round "Fight of the Year" war with Donald Cerrone to capture the Interim WEC Lightweight Championship at the end of 2009. Pettis knows what he's up against, and he's preparing for a long battle in Henderson's home state.

"The thing I'm preparing for the most is his cardio and his endurance," Pettis said. "This guy can go, go, go. So I'm really preparing myself to go seven rounds. I'm fighting five rounds, but I'm preparing to go seven. He's a really good fighter, he's a great wrestler, great striker, great grappler, he's great everywhere, and so am I. I get a chance to show this now.

"The world's kind of seemed to judge me on the couple of fights that I've had, and I've had some pretty good fights, but they haven't seen everything I bring to the cage yet, so this is the guy that's going to push me and I get to see who I really am in this fight."

The winner of this fight will get a crack at the UFC Lightweight Champion, be that Frankie Edgar or Gray Maynard after UFC 125, when they enter the UFC in 2011. While he knows he's got a tough task at hand, Pettis is excited to get a chance to prove just how good he is against the best lightweights in the world.

"I'm looking forward to proving myself [and proving] to the world that I'm the best lightweight fighter there is," Pettis said. "I have a lot to get better at, but I feel I've got what it takes to beat the top level lightweight competition in the world.

"Every interview I used to get asked 'how would you match up against the UFC guys?' I finally get to answer that question."

UFC 123: George Sotiropoulos Submits Joe Lauzon

by Michael David SmithGeorge Sotiropoulos showed once again on Saturday night that he's one of the best ground fighters in the lightweight division in mixed martial arts, submitting Joe Lauzon with a second-round kimura at UFC 123.

"I want to face the best, I want to earn what I get, I want to make a case for the belt," Sotiropoulos said after the win, which improved his record to 14-2. "I'm going to keep making that case."

Sotiropoulos is making the case that he deserves a lightweight title shot, and he'll get that shot in 2011 if he keeps winning.

Joe Lauzon's banner can 'ear' you just fine

DETROIT -- Don't accuse Joe Lauzon of not having a sense of humor. The fighter, who is taking on George Sotiropoulos at UFC 123 at the Palace of Auburn Hills on Saturday, included a not-so-subtle tribute to his well known ears on his sponsor banner.

ROUNDTABLE (pt. 2 of 2): Thoughts on the booking of B.J. Penn vs. Jon Fitch following Penn's UFC 123 KO of Matt Hughes - Perez, Bacior, Williams and Penick

PennBJArtCRG_150_72.jpg
What is your reaction to the B.J. Penn vs. Jon Fitch booking after Penn's UFC 123 knockout of Matt Hughes?

ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

For the first time in a long time, a Jon Fitch fight is exciting. His fight against B.J. Penn is a perennial headliner for sure. If Fitch can beat Penn, there is no question that he is ready to fight for the welterweight title again. In a weird way, the same goes for Penn. If Georges St. Pierre still has the belt, I highly doubt Dana White would like to see Penn get another shot (what would be a third one) against GSP, but if either wins, it looks like its going to happen, whether he likes it or not.

MIKE BACIOR, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I really like this matchup. I want B.J. Penn to prove he can hang with a top welterweight and see just how he stacks up compared to GSP. I am also a fan of Fitch (yes there is such a thing), and want to see him finally earn his title shot.

ALEX WILLIAMS, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

B.J. Penn's knock out of Matt Hughes was impressive enough that I'm okay with Jon Fitch as his next foe. I favor Fitch to winin the same manner ashe always does, and I don't think either of them has a good chance versus Georges St. Pierre (assuming GSP beats Josh Koscheck and stays at welterweight).

JAMIE PENICK, MMATORCH EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

The more I think about this fight, the more I love the matchup. I think part of the problem with some of Fitch's recent fights is the fact that he's been a terrible stylistic matchup for his opponents, and they've not been able to offer anything of a defense against his takedowns and wrestling game. B.J. Penn's takedown defense is, I believe, good enough to make this a much more interesting fight involving Fitch, and I think this will be the toughest fight Fitch has had since his loss to GSP. If Fitch can get a win over Penn, there's no way he can be denied another shot at the Welterweight Championship. At the same time, if Penn picks up a win over Fitch, the UFC doesn't need to worry about putting Fitch into another title shot anytime soon. It's a win-win for the UFC, and it's a highly competitive, highly interesting fight in the welterweight division.

With love affair in Japan maybe Overeem doesn't need the UFC

Alistair Overeem has been on a quite tear in and out the ring. Since 2007, he's ripped through his MMA and K-1 fights, winning 14-of-16. He's also wrecked weight rooms around the world. At 6-foot-5, 245 pounds, he possesses one of the most impressive physiques in the fight game. Plain and simple, he looks like a heavyweight champ.

Japan is fascinated with the Dutchman. His endorsement and merchandising potential in Japan is massive. Overeem, 30, released another great episode in his documentary series "The Reem." It's a nice look into the Japanese culture and its relationship with star athletes from the West.

Overeem's future will be interesting to track. When Dana White questions his standing in the heavyweight rankings, in what may be an effort to push him towards the UFC, should "The Reem" even pay attention?

It depends on what Overeem wants.

"For me, it's all about my career and my success. And my financial situation. On the other hand I'm kind of proud to represent K-1," Overeem said. "I think I've grown as a striker. I think the striking has really developed me as an MMA fighter. I want to win that (2010 K-1 WGP) title. I want to prove to the world that I'm unique, a champion in MMA (and) a champion in K-1."

If he wants to fight the best in MMA - and that's certainly a debatable topic when it comes to heavyweights - then he'll eventually make his way to the UFC.

If Overeem covets the freedom of fighting both MMA and kickboxing, then he'll never fight for Zuffa.

There's also the issue of money. Just look at the endorsement career of someone like Bob Sapp, to witness how much potential the Japanese market holds for elite fighters who have that certain look. If Overeem came to the UFC and eventually won the title, he could make a killing in the U.S. If he fell short and was just one of many on the massive UFC roster, then most major U.S. corporations would have zero familiarity with him and he'd probably lose out on some serious cash.

Overeem is currently ranked No. 8 in the USA Today/Bloody Elbow rankings. He's ahead of UFC heavyweights like Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Cheick Kongo, Brendan Schaub and Roy Nelson. Should he yearn for a spot with America's biggest promotion or is it counterproductive to his career?
